I have heard it played live outdoors, at night, with canons, fireworks and peacocks. That concert was here: http://www.hemingbough.com/heming/heming/hemingbough.htm

I'm not going to bother on these computer speakers. Tomorrow, I'll plug the computer into the sound system and play it properly. It is wonderful music (and I hate tinny speakers).

I think I'll buy a quality CD of the whole thing. I've got a really good stereo set up.

I've actually seen his grave in St. Petersberg. It's incredible as a shrine.

There is all that complicated stuff about his sexuality..and how he had to supress it to a degree. There is no doubt in my mind he is gay. I can relate..and his emotional turmoil.

The Russians suppressed a lot of stuff about him. They won't even admit that he committed suicide.

Actually that YouTube version is total disgrace because it ends before the end.

There should be a health warning on it...

Mahler

Post 10

Effers;England.

Listened to the end of Mahler's third as well..which is very big.

I won't post anymore YouTube links though..they don't really come close.

Mahler overall is probably my favourite classical composer who deals with the really big type stuff in music.

He's always tied to the Earth in his music though, however grand.

My favourite of his is probably, 'Das lied von der erde', 'Song of the Earth'.

This piece ends as deep quietly and fading into nothingness as you could imagine...it goes on forever into nothingness that is just as full of energy as the other music...but in another way.

**

I lost a lot of my music collection a few years ago. I must build up the Classical stuff again.

I do listen on computer with headphones...but mainly on Stereo with CDs

CDs are of a much higher quality of information than MP3s/4s etc

If you've spent £££ over the years on building up a stereo system you need the best recordings.

I spent weeks on situating my speakers properly to get the best 'soundstage' Plus the very best rock solid speakers stands you can get.

Have ordered the Deutcher Gramaphone, von Karajan conducting Berlin Philharmonic version, of the 1812.

It's winging it's way already.

Cannot wait.

Best version of the Love Death from Tristan and Isolde on YouTube IMO.

Brilliantly filmed as well as decent sound quality. Watch for the panning across the amazing ceiling just before climax..
