I think things need to get more serious again here.

Gifford contacted me today for the first time in ages which was nice. We had a long thread at one point about Proust's, Remembrance of things Past, the longest novel in western literature, which I read when about 30. It had a profound effect on me, because of amazing sentance structure..ie they are so long..that by the time you get to the end of one, you have gone into a weird labarhinth of forgetting what the start was about. But then you start to accept that.

Its like a dream. I would read late at night..and my dreams became an extension of the book.

Don't get me wrong. It is a book to make sense from..but sense in a dream like way..its hard to explain.

And its his life story re-written as a new story as we all do in fact.

But maybe tomorrow I'll post a bit...maybe.

It's shut again now..what's the bloody point?

No-one but us posts here. it may as well be closed. H2g2 is a cultural desert..despite its guide pretentions.

That's just doctor's waiting room stuff...about as challenging.

We are banging our heads against a brick wall.

Its a desert.

Someone once told me there's meant to be this debate over who is the greatest genius Bach or Mozart.

My preference has always been for Mozart. But then recently I had a Bach phase. And realised how intensly optimistic his music is emotionally..apart from all the clever fugue stuff. But it seems to me his music is far more immersed in the Christian idea of goodness. So it only speaks to part of the heart.

The myth is that Mozart's music came to him straight from God though. if so that's a more rounded god. Mozart speaks to the whole heart..it's as much the devil as God. To use that terminology, or Apollo and Dionysius, or whatever silly opposites are used to try to express these things.

I'm back more into Mozart again now. In fact I don't think I could stand Bach at present.

I'm reviving this journal...it'll be good for me I think. I started a music journal and posted a link to some music by Ravel...the second being from his ballet Daphne et Chloe...but as he described it, a choreographic symphony. I refreshed my memory of the story based on a Greek story by Longus written in 2C AD. It's to do with a goatherd and a shepherdess.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daphnis_et_Chloé

It is illustrated as can be seen from the article with this amazing set design for the 1912 premiere

Water colour and goache on paper.

I think it's brilliant...
