I'm in the odd position that my employer has recently blocked access to the BBC because it carries WAN-mangling streaming video on BBC News and other pages. This has now been relaxed to some degree (h2g2 is currently available), but all sites designated as "Chat" are barred (including MSN messenger, Google Chat).
Moving forward, we have to be careful that h2g2 dot com isn't categorised in the same bucket as high-volume chat sites. It should be in the Wikipedia category, really. Keeping a high-quality front page with Edited Guide prominent would support this.

Indeed. I don't know enough about whitelists to know how to approach this.
A grown-up default skin would help.
