Last Sunday morning (way too early) I departed my home down near London to fly up to Glasgow to attend university, okay term isn't for another two weeks but the contract of my halls started on the Saturday so I'll be damned if I'm paying for something I'm not using, especially as I can get to know everyone in my halls.

I'm sharing a room which I thought would be weird but thankfully the guy is alright mostly, the people on my floor are mostly great people (two Hitchhiker's fans :D) and oddly enough in the next room to me is somebody who I never knew but apparently lived about 15 minutes walk away from me back home, weirdness. Anyways laptop sorted out and now have internet connection in my room so shouldn't have any problems getting on HooToo this year, unless the servers go down.

'Cos I'm in Glasgow, Scotland and Eastenders often refer to the Scottish as Scotch, much to there annoyance so I found out. I'm studying in Glasgow University and should be doing English literature, philosophy&politics/theatre studies but I don't have to decide till next Sunday evening anyway.

My course doesn't start until two weeks Tuesday week so I have a lot of time to not hit the books and just go out and meet people, Goldie Lookin' Chain are on at the SU bar tonight. Should be funny, songs about mothers with penises, hmmm.

Yeah you do seem to be having a bad time with your internet, I'm guessing you're on NTL cos they are awful really, just keep nagging til its done.

i have no idea who does it. it's a system in the boarding houses that's been unreliable since it started. actually that's not fair, it's only recently that it's been weird but it seems like ages because i've got loads of frees now and i wouldn't mind being able to go on the internet in them.

how's Scotland? seen any haggis farms? i hear those things are right little smiley - bleeps when they try to bite you.

about your course, are you doing English lit AND philosophy & politics AND theatre studies or 2 out of the 3? sorry i'm a little slow at the moment.

Mouldy Looking Stain eh? i've heard of them. i heard they're a taking the piss band which is ok, but if they're serious then i'm very worried about their mentality.smiley - erm

yeah the thing about hitting the books was a joke. how are your dorm people? glad to hear about the hitch-hiker fans.smiley - ok

Ah...that explains your absence.

Please tell me you're not doing a triple degree, that's just show offy.

Good to hear about the hitchhikers fans!

I start on Sunday, there's one of those fun days so I thought I'd go along as at present i can't attend any of the evening stuffsmiley - wah and I don't want people to think I'm boring and anti-social!

GLC? Poor you...

No not doing triple degree. In Scotland the courses are a lot more flexible, rather than being admitted to a course you're admitted to a faculty and from within that you choose the subjects you want to do. The first two years you do three subjects and two exams in each, the second two years you do whatever you're mastering in.

So I'm doing Eng lit primarily, but as my other two I'm tossing up between philosophy, politics&theatre studies, I'll choose at my meeting next week.

Goldie Lookin' Chain are clearly a tongue in cheek group, after all their first album was called The Greatest Hits, their second is called Safe As Fuck. They were pretty good but the union was full of idiots so we left and walked out into the night which soon started to piss down and the wind blew my hair all over the place. Not nice.

Yeah internets easy to use on laptops, its literally plug in and play here. I didn't realise you went boarding school Galigan, I can't imagine doing that.

Phew! The faculty thing sounds like a good idea. I'm looking forward to choosing my modules for Performing Arts!

Ooh, and sorry for sounding like a granny but you might want to cut down on the swearing. I wouldn't yikes you but I think the Mods do random checks and moderation is a pain.

the swearing was a quote so it shouldn't be looked on as being too serious.

yeah i'm at boarding school. i live overseas you see, so i have to board and sometimes i'm the only one left in in my boarding house which can be either not too bad or disgustingly boring. boarding's not that bad, but it's better for me now in general that it was when i started some years ago because now i know people and back then i was the new really tall guy who no one knew at all. still, now we get student beer bar and 6th form priviledges which are all good.smiley - smiley

Well thanks to sexual segregation we get to student bars: the Glasgow University Union and the Queen Margeret Union (both of which appear on Wikipedia surprisingly, I think in a year or so I might do an entry on the whole university as its not on here yet). Basically back in the day the GUU was founded as mens only then about 30 years afterwards the women were getting all suffragy and they wanted their own union. Then at some point they both thought what the hell, and instead made it so you had to join one or the other, but as a fresher I get to go to both and at GU theres GLC and at QMU theres Biffy Clyro tonight so I guess I'm going there. Probably a Wetherspoons first.

Still though, a student beer bar at VI Form woulda been nice, I probably wouldn't have done so well in A Levels but hey it woulda been nice. Though being from where I'm from it would probably only have lager 'cos I think I was the only bitter drinker in the VI Form, maybe one or two others. Up here there's a fair bit more selection.

Yeah I read somewhere that swearing in quotation is okay, also I'll blame it on a guy on my floor who is very coarse in his language, he keeps making me swear on the phone and stuff. Apologies for future weeks, also am in a bad mood as was forced to split with gf coming here so kind of having mood swings. Well, that and going to bed at 7 in the morning and being woken up by the cleaners at 9, then by chirpy people again at about 12 - not good. I've only just come out of the shower and had breakfast and its twenty to 3

20 to 3, not bad. are the cleaners there foreign? ours are welsh and one of them will talk about ANYTHING in an effort to stop working for a while. i said hello to her once and couldn't get rid of her for literally the next 11 minutes.

the student bar we get here is for the top 2 years (6.1 and 6.2 or lower and upper 6th) but after christmas the law's changing so we might not have it anymore. the teachers say they're looking for a loophole but we don't really know how it's going at the moment. we're just enjoying it while we can. it serves wines, not sure how many though, carlsberg (not sure if that's beer or lager) and, my personal favourite, Strongbow. i think they do bitter as well but i don't know what sort. i actually know very little about different types of alcoholic drinks.smiley - erm

do you know how much sexual segregation there is in golf? when my parents were talking to me about it i was shocked that stuff like that still goes on. this was when they were inviting me to join after me and both my brothers had been on the waiting list since birth. loads of other people who hadn't been had joined ahead of us because they 'know people' and my older brother had been forgotten about so they hadn't asked him to join the juniors so he would have to have payed extra to join the seniors because he was 18, but when they eventually answered out complaints they invited him to join the juniors even though he was over 18. he's the one that likes golf as well. if they's forgotten me and invited him it probably wouldn't have been quite as annoying.
this is all comp[letely irrelevant to the previous topic, i just felt like ranting of about golf for a while.

what's a Wetherspoons?

Scotch

Post 12

Tony2Times/Prof. Chaos

No I was shocked to find my cleaners aren't foreign - at my school they were all Eastern Europians which was rather annoying as they suffered a fair bit of abuse from pupils in the school, rarely to their face but still that kind of ignorance annoys me because at least they're working.

Golf is a very much upper class sport and thus its based on segregation and other things but thats not always a bad thing. Sexism in the game is bad of course and it is kind of annoying when patronage happens to others and not you but nepotism is the surest way of keeping the club in a decent state. If you let any old riff raff in there could be divots and flying balls and foul langusage and all the rest of it, I know its unlikely but I've seen it happen. So even though I'm not upper class I respect why they keep it exclusive.

JD Wetherspoons is the name of an owner of a large chain of pubs across Britain, possibly other places, where the drink is cheap essentially. They are also noticable for not playing music at all, having no pool tables, normally serving food and being the first string of pubs to ban swearing - with not altogether total success. I don't like the ones at home but one up here is really lavishly furnished - normally they attract students and are packed so you can't find a seat, which suits them because people drink more when they are standing up.

On types of alcohol, both lager and bitter are types of beer, as are stout and ale. I'm meaning to do an entry on them but don't know enough about production etc. so will research that in my next hols. Mainly I want to quell the American culture that beer is lager, which is why bitters and other types are more and more ignored.

Lager is sort of goldeny and fairly smooth, while being very fizzy
like Carling, Stella, Carlsberg etc.
Bitter is browny-red, thick and tangy with less fizz (meaning it should be half-poured, left to settle and then have the rest poured) e.g. John Smith's, Tetleys, Worthingtons etc.
Stout is black as the ace of spades and so very thick and not at all fizzy, its most famous brand is Guiness
Ale I don't know enough about but things like Adnams, Imperial etc. its not very popular but it used to be in England and should be served at room temperature, hence the popular American fallacy that Brits drink our beer warm. *sigh*

smiley - hug wasn't getting at you about the swearing...just thought I'd better mention it!

Wow! You know a lot about alcohol (tells you everything you need to know about students) I didn't know what the distinctions were so ta for that. Might add that you forgot cider, which to the uninitiated may be confused as beer. (Very potent and made of apples, apparently tastes yummy and has cool names like 'Scrumpy') I'm virtually tee total so this isn't my specialist subjectsmiley - biggrin

Segregated union? Well that's no fun, I need sexy males. Lots of 'em! Our union had just been revamped, apparently they spent a million rebuilding it and getting everything sorted, which again tells you everything you need to know about students: 1 million on a glorified pub!

Scotch

Post 14

Tony2Times/Prof. Chaos

Funnily enough I was gonna mention cider but decided against it just cos I was doing about beer, plus Galigan said he drunk Strongbow which prob means he knows what cider is. Though the only cider I'd drink is Magners/Bulmers depending on where you are, comes from Tipperary but it tastes a little better once its travelled I think - to think there.

Well it was segregated back in the days of sexism, prob been de-segregated since the 60s or 70s. Now you have to choose which union to join but its a big decision as I'm here for 4 years, I can still go to the other union but it costs money and only sometimes.

Surprisingly I'm not a boozer, I only have 3 pints max when I go out, I just know about alcohol cos I like to drink it for its taste rather than its effect. Well, some alcohol, not all - vodka gives me a stiff jaw after 5 or so shots so I avoid it.

>5 or so shots

That sounds like a lot of vodka!

And I didn't know what Strongbow was...chuckling over cider from Tipperary tho'. Stupid question: where is Tipperary?

Post 16

Tony2Times/Prof. Chaos

Well everyone knows its a long way to get there, its actually down in Ireland, middle of the country and a bit South, obv in the Republic. Gorgeous scenery there, I went there for the Fleadh (fla-ah) which is a festival of Irish music, was quite fun.

Well the 5 shots was many moons ago when I was young, alcohol was appealing and getting pished seemed like the most fun thing in the world, even if it was in a field. I could take a lot more then than I could now but thats probably a good thing, I don't wanna damage my brain too much.

Scotch

Post 17

Galigan

i go for the vod sometimes. normally if i want to get drunk quickly, which i know is stupid but i don't care right now, but i like strongbow for the taste. don't like light ciders like white lightening. horrible stuff, especially when it's warm. it's got to be cold and dark just like the night air! don't know where that simile came from but i'm in a really weird mood tonight, and it's nothing to do with alcohol.

Nothing wrong with a bit of poetry; reassuring to know you two aren't just lager loutssmiley - winkeye

Scotch

Post 19

Tony2Times/Prof. Chaos

Never a lager lout, if anything I'm a bitter lout :p lager's all taste the same within their own continent, bitters taste different in every brand. Sleep a lot before you go to university, I can't seem to go to bed before 6 at the mo and then I feel bad in the morning about not waking up before 2 so I'm just getting my 8 hours, and when you're sleeping dodgy hours you need more than 8.

Scotch

Post 20

Galigan

i'll keep that in mind. i'm doing dodgy hours here too, although i suppose that's actually my fault.smiley - erm

i'm not a lager lout cos i drink cider, but i wouldn't go and get into fights with random people just because they look at me or kick someone's car in because it's there and i'm bored. i hate the yob culture and whenever i'm out enjoying myself i always get the feeling people are watching me as if i'm a yob.
