Why do they think second year students need to be taught how to use the library? 3 hours of library and how to use databases. grrr.

Ooh! Ooh! I know!
It's because you're a scientist. Most scientists rarely visit the library. Us arts students, mind, are in there most days.

I admit I haven't been in there since the first year library thing BUT it was mostly a computer literacy thing about how to search journals, it may surprise them to know that computational & theoretical means I have actually used a computer database before now .... Grr rant etc.
You want a game of badminton/tennis/squash etc. at some point soonish?

Yes! I think we should get everyone for badminton early next week, once Roses is over. Keep an eye on your facebook!

I spent half my time in college in the library. Mainly reading New Scientist, National Geographic, Time, Newsweek, and New Statesman. But I did glance at the books too. In the 000-099 section (beside the magazines), I picked up some handy computer stuff, including a fascinating book on Algorithmics. And in my own territory in the 540s (I think: my memory's going), I read a lot of chemistry stuff.
A few years previously there'd been a massive chemistry class, but when I was there it was tiny, so the library had plenty of books. I never bothered buying any for myself.
