Black-Eyed Girl... Sometimes the only sane answer to an insane world is insanity! Started conversation Jan 29, 2004
Hiya all,
Right, Im on digibox so some of the smileys aren't very clear as to what they are.... When I click on said smiley, it takes me to the front page of smiley land and Im still none the wiser as to what the smiley is and what catergory to find it under, thus often am smiley free. My other friends on digibox also have this minor problem, so I went and had me a thought and this is how it went!
I figured if I could compile an A-Z of smileys, then everyone (especially those on digibox) would be able to find their elusive smiley without too much hassle! This task has proved too huge for me as I have to get it spot on or retype from the letter C!
If anyone likes this idea, would consider it as a digibox help page, and has a PC and alot of patience, please feel free to carry on where Ive left off.. A2242559
If Im stepping on anyone's toes, then I deeply apologise but not being able to find a suitable smiley is doing my head in. I have nothing against the current layout but sometimes if you dont know what you're looking for, its hard to find what smiley has appeared in a conversation!
Thanks all.
Willow

The main problem for digibox users has seemed to be that if there are too many smileys/links on a page it crashes. The previous version of <./>Smileys</.> was like that. It was rather slow on PCs too. Many people complained a lot. However, with the smileys split up into sections, the software would have to be modified to take someone directly from a link made by a smiley in a conversation post to the correct category page.
I made a suggestion a while back that the existing link markers (ie where you end up rather than where you start) could be added into the main page under the correct categories with just the list of names there. So one would see the category and then get a single link out to the category page. No software changes would have been required. So far this has not been done. Meanwhile other people have made various other versions of the smiley page because they didn't want it changed that way. So yours will be yet another such version.
Incidentally, you probably don't see the name of the smiley in the conversation post the way a PC user can (ALT text). So how are you imagining digibox users would know which name to look up in an A-Z rather than a themed index?

The ideal would be if you clicked on the smiley and landed in the right catergory, at least that way you'd be searching in the right general area as I believe you said!
I believe that alot of folk on digibox have the new box that rarely crashes, so an A-Z could be possible.
All I see on a digibox is the actual picture of the smiley, thats it, so tracking it down can be tricky.
The way Ive laid out my idea is the actual smiley, its name and then a link to the catergory page its on so that people can get the long, short and guideML codes for it. Its easier to explain if you pop in for a look!
As I said, as an idea, its not the worst I've had but if I miss anything while doing the guideML, I have to retype everything from the letter C onwards, which is hugely frustrating as you can imagine.
I was mainly fishing for some help really, cheeky of me, I know!!

Well if you want to risk crashing your box, try A1925598.
I did once list the smileys in alphabetical order but decided that was less helpful than being able to find them by subject category (though not quite the same as the official ones). Yet another version of the smileys (digibox friendly this time since it predates the changes to the main page) is A1000008. It uses threads to limit the number of smileys shown.

SEF, you're a
The first one was fine, no crashing or anything. It was the boxes, they'd crash at anything.
If you dont mind, may I put links on my personal space for those pages? It just makes it easier on my poor brain.

Yes you can link to them. They've been there a while now and I probably won't change the use of the page. There may still be other pages around which you would like better though.
