I realize this is the wrong place to discuss this, but I can't seem to find any Guide entries specifically dedicated to explaining smilies...
Why are there no backwards smilies (i.e. (-: &-: etc)? Do they exist in languages such as Spanish that begin sentences with inverted punctuation? Or are they simply considered superficial?

I'm just going to take a stab in the dark at this - it's because we read from left to right, so therefore you get eyes then nose then mouth.
Any other suggestions?!
