Another Ale for the Gentlefolk?
Phil Started conversation Aug 12, 2004
Dear sir, I hope you are well and this missive reaches you in fine form.
I seem to recall about a year ago my good lady friend Ms M. Chicken contacted you with a view to recieving you at our home for a celebration of fine ale and the glory of the Queen.
Once again it is our pleasure to invite you for this occasion, the Glossop Victorian Weekend and beer festival on the 4th and 5th of September 2004 - period costume, not essential but prizes given for the best

Ooooo! I remember this being mentioned before. And I have the week before off work for a currently unspecified holiday. Hmmmm. I shall discuss with the Memsahib.

Well it would be lovely if you two can come down

At last year's event, I'd have loved to see the woman dressed in the "Temperance League" outfit quaffing a pint of best ale or cider in the beer tent.
And we never did go to any of the Partington Players Victorian Melodrama (free) performances. We did however sample cream teas in the theatre club room to the accompaniment of a pianist playing popular songs of the era - very refined
If you dress in costume you get to take part in the parade if you want to....

The only "if" is "If" we come. Costumes would so not be a problem. The cream tea sounds very civilised and just what is required to keep me from the beer, at least for a while.

Who was that folk singing guy who appeared in Sharpe? I think he would count as Amiable Folk.
As to us, I need to sit down with young Toc and plan our holiday route to check we can get to Glossop and back in time and with the minimum of fights. Does much happen on the Sunday? i.e. Could we use that to drive back north or are we better going up on the Monday? Also, what is the camping like in the area?

There would be day 2 of the victorian weekend (somewhat smaller than the saturday) and beerfest (depending on how much brew they still have left).
There are a couple of campsites nearby - one at Crowden but that is a number of miles distant and one up the top of the hill at Windy Harbour - not sure if it's just caravans though . Depending on the size of tent, I might fit on the lawn A bit further out from Glossop and you're into the Peak District national park where depending on wich way you go there are lots of campsites.

Ah well plenty to choose from, rough field to fully serviced and everything in between.

What ho all! Well we checked out the sites, booked one just down the road at Crowden, looked out all our camping gear, planned a general wandering route south and even booked the following Monday off work so we could see the whole weekend. And then the clutch went on the car. . We are currently investigating various fixes, alternatives and possibilites and will let you know. Personally I am still for coming down, and as such will need to get some contact details from you, but it may not be in such a jolly fashion as we had originally planned.

Ah, oh dear. There be some problems I see. Are you still at the same email as used in OTD? If so I'll drop you my contact details there.

Munchkin Posted Aug 23, 2004
My email has changed, but the new one is receiving OTD. Give it a go and we will se if I receive anything.

Ack. I can't seem to find an email from you in the OTD archives. If you could send me one to the email I'm at on OTD that'd be fine and dandy and we can work it from there.
Cheers

I would just like to thank you both for a fine weekend. We got home safely, with an overnight at Ullswater, and now have a kitchen full of damp tent. Glossop and its Victoriana was great and I really did enjoy the Beer Fest, especially the low key-ness of it all. Thanks again people.
