I'll be honest. I've never been an usher at a wedding. I've been a page boy, a best man and in a few months time I'll be a groom, but were I to be an usher, this is the sort of thing I'd want to read.

Congratulations
Only thing that struck me was-
"As ushers may not know all their fellow ushers."
Which seems to be missing something.
But anyway, a very informative and entertaining entry.

Excellent article. Having been both an Usher and a best Man but never a Groom you have got everything just about right. The first time I was an Usher was when I was about seventeen and ushing was exactly what I though I was expected to do.
Just one small spelling error.
There is a rough strategy to being a greater and seater.
should be
There is a rough strategy to being a greeter and seater.
Good luck for the future to you and your bride.

Nice entry bluebottle as you've written 100 EGs you know what your doing
May I suggest you could add 'Tips for Best Man Speeches' A695324 and Wedding Etiquette A1067780 to your 'Related H2G2 Articles' list.
Interesting, I didn't know you could add links like that, I know now.
for the future

Hello Bluebottle
I like this Comprehensive and amusing.
A few comments:
Is it an Usher, or an usher? A Best Man, or a best man? You use both upper and lower case. It probably doesn't matter which you use, but needs to be consistent.
Not only do you get Matrons of Honour, but Maids of Honour - the unmarried variety of the former.
The para starting >>Traditionally, the Groom would pay...<< sits better after the one ending >>...brightly coloured suit that mourners at weddings wear.<<
First sentence in the section 'Before the Wedding' reads oddly to me Perhaps reword along the lines of >>As ushers may not know all their fellow ushers, it is recommended that they meet beforehand and find out what is expected of them from the chief usher.<<
The first para under 'Where Are The Guests Seated?' seems to be about duties Would it be more appropriate under the 'Duties' section?

Hi Bluebottle! I hadn't seen this use of the word usher before. In Ireland we call them "Groom's Man". An usher would be someone who points people to their seats.

I would like to see the distinction that this is a man's job very early on. While it might be self-evident, I reckon it should go in there...
Perhaps something like: 'Being asked to be an usher at a wedding is one of the most flattering things that can be asked of *any man*' or something like that.
Also in a lot of weddings here in America they are known as ushers so perhaps a bit of a waffle to say: 'which is why in America they are *sometimes* known as "Groom's men".'
But overall, I really enjoyed this one.

Super stuff, I have been so concerned with my Best Man speech that I had been sidetracked from other duties, this article has changed that.
