This was actually said to Winston Churchill, not to Oscar Wilde. Another, similar, conversation went like this:

Woman: You are drunk!
Churchill: And you are ugly. But in the morning I shall be sober.

The phrase 'Nil illegitimi carborundum' is 'bastard' Latin (i.e., it looks like it but isn't) for 'Don't let the b*****ds grind you down'. The correct Latin (according to Beard) is 'Noli nothis permittere te terrere'. I'm not convinced, myself. I did Latin at school some years ago (not admitting how many) and I'm sure that 'terrere' means to frighten. Never mind, it's close enough!
