Taking a stroll around the block...
Skankyrich [?] Started conversation Mar 19, 2008
I've had a bit of an odd spring by my standards. I've spent an inordinate amount of time at the PC, when normally I'd be stretching my legs out and enjoying the warming weather. Normally I'm well out of hibernation by now. The Test series with New Zealand hasn't helped, and I've got a bit too much into the habit of staying up until 4am and sleeping until lunchtime. I planned an earlyish night last night but found I couldn't sleep, and when E woke me up before she went to work she said quite straighforwardly that I should really be getting out there. She's quite right; I haven't been for a good walk for a long time, and spring days fill me with a vigour that I'm currently missing.
So I'm off for a walk, metaphorically and literally.
I'm going to pop in to do my Subbing and to finish this blasted Uni project, and will of course be wearing my Post Team hat after the weekend. But, essential Fantasy Krikkit business aside, I won't be checking any of my messages or posting around these parts at all over the next week. I've put a lot of time into h2g2 over the last few months, but it's time I took myself out of the front line for a little while.
If you want me, email me. Apart from that, keep the place tidy, eh?

Theres a philosophy I started following when h2g2 started interferring with my life... and it was this - its not a job! We're volunteers...
Unless of course your enjoying yourself too much, then thats different, feel free to let h2g2 interfere with your life
I'm off for the next week or so, so I think I might go for a walk tomorrow... and then I'll get that bloody story finished and put in a format you can use... 4 and 1/2 parts now ... I don't know why I take breaks half way through stories... although I do now have a good idea how the first half of the second episode is going to go...

I hope you have a really good time out there! It's too cold for me though. An hour or so with the dogs and then I'm back indoors.

You'll feel the better for it Rich, I always do.
Just let me know if you manage to spot a spring day on your travels, yeah?

me help tidy...I can tidy but it will soon be messy again
It's good to recharge those batteries at times. A walk is good help clears the mind and you can come back to an entry or whatever it is with new eyes. A lovely bath and lavendar will also help soothe away those aches and pains and restore you.

Sounds like a plan, Skanky.
Unless Elton has a coronary, we'll all still be here when you get back.
By the way, I listened to your mix cd again the other day and it really is very good.

Rich,
I think that is a sound idea for all of us, where it is possible. I have a touch of belated spring fever today, but I doubt it will last. A good walk would be brilliant but I'd better go quickly if the weather forecast is anything like correct.
Have a good week. I wish I knew how you do all the things you do, but perhaps that is why you need the break.

Terran,

What sound advice! Unfortunately that's the nature of volunteers don't you think? ..... we commit!!
I will bear it in mind when trying to write an article when RL is damanding attention
Take care,

It's quite warm here. I was out cleaning windows in my T-shirt. Also very sunny.
Last week was dreadful. And we had snow one morning. But this week's been glorious.

The frost started yesterday here, and they say we'll eventually get the snow we had hoped for for Christmas.

"What sound advice! Unfortunately that's the nature of volunteers don't you think? ..... we commit!!"
Well some would say I need committing, but thats another story I think more my point is that you have to enjoy it, or gain something from it. Volunteering is just doing that really, doing something for free because you feel you may gain something from that, be that a sense of well being for helping others, or a sense that you are improving yourself in some shape or form. These are good reasons.
My biggest concern with this site in the past has been that people start doing something, which they feel they are benefitting from, but then burn themselves out. And then usually its when someone, who doesn't realise the effort that person is putting in (or doesn't care), tells them that they're not doing it just right, which tends to be the straw that breaks the camels back. I think its important to make sure that that stage is never reach, and we protect people like Rich who are trying to do something special. Thats all really.

I quite agree. Not about you being committed of course, 'cus I would have to go too
It takes a long time to learn to say 'No' when you are being asked to do too much, but it is an important lesson to learn if you are to continue to be useful.

Ok, I had to pop back. Another Test match, so I have to do something between balls.
'> and to finish this blasted Uni project <
Do you mean my project?' (Venus) - No, this one - A27731720
'I want to join you! Wait, I'm coming!' (GB). Some of the best walks in England are down here. If you like nature, like a walk and nice quiet pints in friendly pubs, give me a shout
'I hope you have a really good time out there! It's too cold for me though.' (Mina) - too cold? Mind if I ask where you'll be spending the weekend?
'Just let me know if you manage to spot a spring day on your travels, yeah?' (KB) - It's definitely spring here. Everything is budding, and the weather is crisp but clear. Bit cold, but what are jumpers for?
'Spring? where? its still the depth of winter here' (2legs) - The Westcountry; England's warm, subtropical paradise... and if you're looking for a cheap, out-of season break...
'By the way, I listened to your mix cd again the other day and it really is very good.' (Elentari) - Brilliant, innit? I can think of plenty I missed out that I could torture people with, though...

It's interesting, because Webbie has always told me to make sure I don't burn myself out. I agree absolutely with everything Webbie and Terran have said - I've been very close to burn-out before, and I know when to take a step back now. I'm perfectly happy with the workload or I wouldn't have taken it on and, as Terran suggests, I enjoy everything I do. It was perhaps getting to the point where there might have been too much pressure on me to keep enjoying it in a week or two, though, and I don't want to feel that I have to do it all.
So I'm thoroughly enjoying my relaxation, thank you very much

Sorry, Opti, I missed you out:
'It's good to recharge those batteries at times. A walk is good help clears the mind and you can come back to an entry or whatever it is with new eyes. A lovely bath and lavendar will also help soothe away those aches and pains and restore you.' - You're absolutely right. I find a good walk gives you new ideas, actually; a good chance to clear your head and think about what's next. I have plenty of thoughts about walks; maybe I'll bore you with them sometimes

"(Mina) - too cold? Mind if I ask where you'll be spending the weekend? "
At home.
The snow and wind appears to be marching up and down the route I was going to use. There is traffic chaos everywhere because it seems every rail network decided to use buses this weekend and it seemed sensible to postpone the trip.
