Tomorrow, I'm off to my first away match for several years
The benefits of Torquay United being in the Blue Square Premier League now (that's the Conference) are that 1. we look quite good compared to the other rabble, and 2. there are a few more 'local games'. For those of you that aren't that up on UK geography, Torquay is about as far as you can get from anywhere unless you live in Scotland or Cornwall. This is fine most of the time, because we have a nice regional identity and people don't tend to bother us too much. But we're culturally fairly remote, and if you want to go to a sporting event or concert it's normally a major hassle.
But the local football team are unbelievably rubbish, so last year we got relegated into the fifth tier of English football. That's pretty bad. The good thing is that tomorrow we play Salisbury city away, and that's only two hours from me. I also have two old schoolfriends who live nearby, so we're all going together.
So tomorrow I catch an early train to Salisbury, have a pint and meet the lads off the train. We're then going for a large Chinese buffet for lunch, followed by a couple of pints and a couple of hours stood in whatever windswept hellhole passes for a football ground up there. Then it's a couple more pints, and a late train home. I haven't been to an away game for several years, so I'm quite excited
Check out the scores at about 4.50 tomorrow, and you'll be well prepared for what to expect from me when I get home
