I was just reading something written roughly a century ago.
"Everybody was singing songs of war and glory, and having to listen to these songs was a great trial to a person with an ear for music."

That quote reminds me of St Patrick's Day weekend in Pittsburgh, 1976, I think it was.
David Hammond was speaking and singing at the Irish Folk Centre, or whatever it was called. The whole thing was probably organised by the Ancient Order of Hibernians. Anyway, the man who introduced him was about 75, tiny, and kept saying 'he worked on this fil-um', while Hammond kept a straight face.
THEN, the whole lot got up and sang 'The Star-Spangled Banner' followed by 'The Soldier's Song'. We bellowed along with them, and Hammond stood there bravely enduring it all.
Then, of course, he played his guitar and sang beautifully.
