h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Apparently this summer/autumn I'm going to be setting up a community group. I have to stop getting bored and getting Schemes In My Head!

Fraid so.

The idea is a community walking group. Not a 'hiking' group or hillwalking or the like. More for, say, people with various mobility problems, or recovering from surgery, who need to get more active gradually. Or even just people who are really unfit and can't exactly take on Kilimanjaro from scratch, but want to start walking or getting fit. With hopefully the added benefit that people in situations like that can also use it as a way to become more socially involved, since that's often a big issue.

I think it's going to be a lot of hard work...

So what have you been roped into?

Coder Dojo. Apparently I'm going to be inducting the town's teenagers into the joys of PHP and javascript. Actually, probably Python rather than PHP, as (a) it's supposed to be easier to learn, and (b) it'll give me an excuse to learn Python.

We should be starting in September, but things have to start moving now. Because it's work with kids, we need Garda clearance, which can take ages to come through, so we've registered with the Midlands Youth Services, and started talking to the library about the use of their venue. (They have a rather nice upstairs computer room.)

A friend of mine is doing most of the organising, but it looks like I'll be doing most of the actual teaching.

Sounds interesting! Hopefully mine won't involve youngsters, which suits me, as they tend to add a whole new layer of administrative hassle.

You do realise that if it's called a dojo, they'll all have to bow to you? And that this, in turn, means it's the first step to becoming the deity of techy midlands teenagers? Godhood is almost upon you!
