Fiction vs Non-Fiction

Post 1

Surfing through GW, I have come to the conclusion that fact is better than fiction. Some incredibly good writing in the non-fiction, some great stories, going from the tragic to the hilarious, a window on the real world. I don't feel quite so enthusiastic about the fiction postings. Personal preference, I suppose.

Hi Clarrisa

Good to hear from you again. I'll have to have a good look at the non-fiction section. I've not concentrated on it much.

Thanks for alerting me to it. I'm interested in writing some travel/non fictional pieces which involve research. It will be good to see what's posted there smiley - smiley

Some remarkable writing, some heartrendingly funny, heartrendingly tragic tales - all life is there! Some excellent writing in the fiction too but after a few months on GW, I think I prefer the non-fiction postings...My personal taste...smiley - smiley

Yes, you're right. I haven't looked at the non-fiction section in much detail. It may be that they are more grounded in reality. smiley - smiley

Some of the pieces in non-fiction make for pretty painful reading... Be prepared, depending on whose work you click on.
For sheer fun, John Doe is extremely amusing.
For tragedy, Candice is heartrending.
I have obviously not read them all but those two do stick out in my mind.smiley - ok

PS to Mark
Just whizzed back and found your Secret Santas - and the commercialisation of Christmas Flash. Please do forgive me - of course, it was a good read. As was your Think Tank which could also quite easily have been posted under Non-Fiction. Both excellent pieces. How to draw the line between fact and fiction, that's the question!
Sorry again, Mark! Please accept my humble apologies...

I haven't been with GW that long. You're an old hand - I am no longer a Newbie but somewhere around mid-way on GW. Haven't sussed it all out yet but am getting there!
Self promotion and rightly so. If you don't blow your own trumpet, no one else will do it for you!

Hope that "healthy" English Breakfast didn't have too many carbs and too much cholesterol. I live really healthily - black coffee (no sugar and no sweetener, thank you) and a nice cigarette to start my day!smiley - biggrin

wel, you might be newist but you have the hang of it me fear...I'm a healthy eater also - black coffee - no sugar - but last night was the first time I've been to a party/little gathering for about a year and had a bottle of red to myself - so you can imagine its affect - an englsh breakfast was just the thing I need this morning and it worked well - I don't do this often - lol. The cigarettes a must too, but again, thinking about quiting them again too...

Hi Clarissa and Mark

Thanks for pointing out the good reads, Clarissa. I'll look out for your work, Mark. We have just had the results today of the Radio Kent Competition. I entered my, For Pat, piece. I didn't win, but it's not surprising as they go for a very different style or writing (if you're interested in seeing winning pieces go to to this link http://www.bbc.co.uk/kent/your_space/words/shortstories/index.shtml.

Clarissa, I rewrote the, 'For Pat' piece and I'm going to repost it in non-fiction for robquill's benefit. It is completely true, at least based on the account of an 83 year old French lady who lived in Boulogne at the time of the war and who is still alive. If you have any comments on the reposted version either of you, I'd be really pleased to have them. For another group I have to write a 1,000 word piece, it has to be romantic. I will post it in non fiction as it will be based on a true story set in 1945. The deadline's the end of December. smiley - smiley

I shall check it out a little later (the For Pat on Non-Fiction); have you altered it from the version I read?
True story set in 1945 - let me know when you post it!
lol
Clarissa smiley - ok
PS Robquill is an extraordinary reviewer - if he does give you a crit, you can be sure you know what he's talking about!

Hi Clarissa

Robquill reviewed my 'For Pat' piece. Yes it was the most useful review I've ever had. I've altered it a bit based on feedback. I only heard about the challenge today to write the romantic piece my first idea was this story set in 1945. It's quite daunting when you are an inexperienced writer like me but I guess I've got to start somewhere....Are you or have you any plans for writing anything in particular?
