It's pronounced Auxters, but spelled Oxters. Also "How?" for "Why?" is commonly used throughout Scotland, especially in Glasgow and the central belt as far as Stirling. I've never heard it used in Aberdeen though...

Just thought I might mention that some common words were forgoten here. Again the spelling might not be right but here they are anyway...
canny - means can't but also steady/wise
greetin - crying
dreak - bad weather drizzle
footer - to play about with something (footer about)
crabbit - bad tempered
kye - cows cattle (orkney)
wee - small
