The Book

1 August, 1999
London, England.

My Neam tree is now doing fine following a traumatic journey early in its young life.

It was presented to by a renowned expert on Neam as a tiny little seedling in Kigali, Rwanda in April, 1999.

I brought it to London in June when the weather in England was at its best. Even then I dared not leave it out at night for fear the climate would get the better of it. I put it near the patio window in my 10th floor, south west facing apartment, where it would catch the sun all day long.

I am delighted to report that with plenty of water and lots of tender loving care it is now 6 cm tall and is absolutely flourishing.

Mr Socks

I am interested in this 'Neam' tree. Can you provide a link to a picture of it? Who are its relatives? Does it flower? How long before it matures, and what is its life span? Is the word 'Neam' an African or English name, and what does it mean? Where will you put it as it grows - and how high will that be??

A couple of quotes to wish you luck with your Neam:

'I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree'
Joyce Kilmer (1886-1918 'Trees' [1914])

'He that plants trees loves others beside himself'
Thomas Fuller (1654-1734: Gnomolia [1732])
