OK, it was great that they made a movie at all.
But it wasn't anywhere NEAR as good as the TV series. The acting was horrible, Zaphod was gross instead of funny, we never find out what happened to his head and the Earth just gets put back again for no readily appearant reason. 
Worst of all were the SINGING DOLPHINS! Aargh!!!
That said, Marvin was funnier than ever, and Slatty was acted pretty well.
But unless someone had read the books, seen the TV series or experienced the story some other way beforehand, I don't think they'll get it. Which is a real shame.
But full marks for trying anyway.

the tv series would have been "high tech" for the time. i thought the film was great but there were bits of it left un-explained (sequal anyone 
)
the tv series sticks more to the original story though and that is why some people like it more

Admittedly I prefer the TV series to the film. As much as I enjoyed it, I just felt that the film's efforts were a bit half-hearted.
