The Hanging Garden of Babylon, as you say, probably did not exist... However, due to the extremely even land around Babylon it is likely that the Babylonians tiered their farming onto many levels over the hillsides to create "step fields", which could be what Plato was refering to as, to support the population of Babylon. this would have to be an astounding feat of engineering on a massive scale...
