I was in Lanzarote with no internet access when the site went live, so I never knew what date it was.

Heh, I've never managed to remember my h2g2 anniversary date. (9.9.99)
So yeah... no, I didn't remember today. Sorry.

I was watching BMT's numbers, and wondering where they were leading, but I had no idea that that was when he started. The changeover was so smooth, I noticed absolutely no difference. The only change which took place (that I have noticed) was that you could enlarge the posting window in Goo.

Wasn't the site off line for about 3 weeks?

I remember more vividly the day in January when the BBC announced they were getting rid of the site.

15th is the correct date. I know this because I managed to nab the Last Ever Post on the BBC and this was pointed out to me on the 15th when the new site went live.

Yes, it was 15 October all right. If you look in <./>Askh2g2</.>, you'll see there's a big gap with nobody posting between 3 Oct and 15 Oct, but postings resume on the 15th. That was the 2nd Interregnum, when the site was being modified by Pastey so that it would work without all the BBC stuff.

I've started to believe that we have a lack of conspiracy theories round here for that era, i reckon something else was being done in the intereditorium
The last comment in the beeb era? That is quite impressive i must say

I hate to be pedantic, but the site was officially launched at midnight on the 16th October, or 00.00 hours of the 17th October UK time. It was an exciting moment, and we had a proper countdown.
The actual history of this is documented in the official Announcement thread, look for the one dated 18th Oct.
Before then, some volunteers had been working on the site, but it was not officially 'open' for the general membership.
The first Entry to be featured on the Front Page was minorvogonpoet's 'Bloomers' A87620529
