What would be in a garden based on h2g2?
Ivan the Terribly Average Started conversation Oct 22, 2011
This journal was triggered by a comment someone made offsite. I was chattering away about my plan to get some more plants today and do something to revitalise my back garden. I mentioned that I'd thought of 2legs as I planted a Giant Badja. (The feeble jokelet does work better with an Aussie accent that's a bit broader than mine, but you get the idea.) The response was that I could have an h2g2 garden.
So I've been thinking about this, partly because the concept seemed odd enough to be viable, and partly because on day four of my journal-a-day week I'm scratching about for ideas.
What *would* be in a garden based on and/or inspired by h2g2?
In broad terms I've decided that it would be a number of robust specimens, some climbers, some creepers, some wallflowers, some shrinking violets and a fair quantity of, um, manure.
Suggestions for actual species are welcome. I might even do this, if the plants are available.
Ivan.

I would have to say that a bowl of petunias as a centerpiece is a must.

What about mimosas? I'd say we have a fair few of them here.
Not sure they can cope with your climate, though.
I love the idea of this garden.

We have Sensitive Mimosa up north, but it might suffer in Canberra winters. There is a small greenhouse, though...

What about arnica? Whenever somebody has a problem, somebody else will be around to soothe and console and help.

Oooh, how exciting, I'd love to see photos of this finished project.
I believe you'd need at least one spiky cactus, although I'd never name names.
A lemon tree might also be an option for some very sharp wits out there (and GnTs).

Some delicate ickle flowers. Not sure what.
Forget-me-nots - because our collective memory is so long
Russian Vine - because of the speed we grow at, maybe that's more aspirational
A flood. Some tins of Spam.
Some really ineradicable weeds - ground elder or bindweed?

The weeds are here already. I won't name them all in case it causes offence; one person's treasured garden feature is another person's declared noxious weed. (Cotoneaster is a particular problem here, as is blackberry.)
Incidentally, there's a 19th Century pub in Sydney that's officially the 'Rose Shamrock and Thistle' but it's known to everyone as the 'Three Weeds'.

Ben just dragged me here, so thanks Ben!
I think you'd need a romantic, but crumbling folly, which you find down a twisty, difficult to navigate garden path, overgrown with ivy and a hard to open weathered wooden door. When you open it, you find dusty treasures that no-one has looked at for years. Imagine sleeping beauty in the thicket.
You'd also need a beautiful grassed lawn for picnics and a patio with BBQ for all the
ps may I take the liberty and add you to my friends list Ivan?

I would be honoured to be on your friends list, Lanza. I shall reciprocate.
The folly is already here - it's the greenhouse, completely unused at present except as a holiday retreat for spiders. There is a rear patio and an expansive paved area at the front dotted about with pots and things. But there's no lawn, on account of me poisoning it so as not to have to mow it. (It was only about 8 square metres, hardly worth keeping.)

And now I need to go and lie down for eight or nine hours. Please, everyone, do keep planning the garden without me...
