If the Romans called it Mare Nostrum, who called it Mediterranean? I thought that was Latin for "Middle of the World".

Helli Gnomon.

Well I have come across both but I cant remember where though, it looks like we have an overwhelming case for ‘Our Sea’ even IBM ( www.ibm.com/developerworks/.../pa-nl3-marenostrum.html ) go with it. I hope you can supply a reference or better still a correct translation I cant find one then I will be delighted to insert

The alternate translation of mare nostrum is Middle of the World and in some sources the Mediterranean was also been referred to as the ‘Middle Sea‘.

Thank you for your comments always very useful.

Middle of the World is not a translation of "mare nostrum". It is a translation of "mediterranean".

Hello Gnomon
Just a thought - The name Mediterranean is derived from the Latin mediterraneus, meaning "inland" or "in the middle of the earth" (from medius, "middle" and terra, "earth". (Via wiki for speed).

Again I can ammend or add this to the entry.

Is that what you ment smiley - ok

Bob, you don't need to explain to me something that I told you twice already (postings 4 and 6). I know what Mediterranean means.

My question was, if the Romans' name for the sea was Mediterranean, then how can their name for the sea be Mare Nostrum?

Sorry, your last comment before taking out of the Workshop was that there were still some ship types to be included. If you've included these, then that's OK.

Yes I have now finishes the ship types and have excluded the the less common types.
If there any glareing omitions that you can spot let me know please, but I think this would need covering in detail in a seperate Greek and Romean ship entry. smiley - smiley
