Hi Frank,
I was doing all right until I got to the helicopter.
"Dad was on his way, by helicopter and aeroplane" from Scapa Flow.
My goodness me, I didn't realise that the Royal Navy was so advanced in 1944! The US Navy lagged far behind in these matters: On 16 October 1943 the US Navy accepted its first helicopter, a Sikorsky YR-4B (HNS-1), at Bridgeport, Connecticut and on 1 January 1944, the very first helicopter pilot training programme was launched by the US Coast Guard at Floyd Bennett Field, under the direction of the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations (Air). And the record books have clearly got it wrong: the first British helicopter, the Cierva-Weir 9, crashed during a test flight in 1946. Clearly this Helicopter History site http://www.flying-bike.fsnet.co.uk/helistuff/heli.html now needs amending. Still it was nice of the RAF to lend a hand.
