Hmmm, Perhaps you Should stick to tea?
Perhaps you are using it wrong? There are all sorts of ways to augment the taste of coffee. You might try some.
After all, nobody(?) eats raw cocoa powder. It is also quite nasty until sweetened.
Me, I use coffee intravenously; so taste is not a problem.

It's a well-written article, PJ, but i must lament the 'inherently nasty' descriptive.
As an old military dude, i can say that the coffee-making ritual (which you've evoked very well) is just as important as the regulation forbidding sleeping on duty. Sleep can indeed be an enemy, and Coffee is a time-tested weapon.
If there weren't any health repercussions, i'm sure armies everywhere would be using methamphetamines.
Hell, some armies probably do....
It's wonderful to have a freshly-brewed cuppa, good to have a stale-but-hot mug, and only tolerable to pick up the dregs. But...
Coffee is Coffee.
