well its been a month now, since my dad passed on. And i have found out that there are bits of his life that i did'ent know about, strange init only when someone leaves the party, you find out that he hated stuff, so much so that he buried it so deep! 
and the name of his first female fancy, the fact that he punched someone so hard he broke the blokes jaw, still had American shrapnel in his body, aquired in the Koren war! the only bloke in his unit not to have a dear John letter, kept the only letter from his mother, unopened! wanted to name me Peter but got talked out of it!

My Hubby is still going through his father's personal effects.
Only last week he came across his father's discharge papers from the Royal Navy in 1946, this showed his receipt of his demob suit and his good behaviour references. There was also a record of his achievements, as a decoder (rating) and decoder (we can't quite make out what it says, but could be that he was decoding secret messages for officers during the Atlantic Conveys and later in the Indian Ocean). There is even a card from the Ministry of Defence which shows he was waiting for his call up after his initial medical.
We found out that he sailed to Canada to become the original crew for HMS Lossie, where he remained until his demob.

I think you might need a decoder to read the decoder letter 
and yeah its really strange that you find out stuff after they leave, and its made me going to make sure i'm leaving stuff as so my nippers can read and feel the great sense of what a bloke he really was, thats not come out as i would like it too but you get my drift
