Well, after deciding it was time to reinstall my PC (for some obscure reason, it was refusing to perform DNS lookups over my dialup accounts, and it needed doing anyway) I'm back online. Things seem to be faster, but it's probably just my imagination. Thanks again to Microsoft, for making this not only possible, but frequently necessary.
I really must get round to setting up dialup accounts under Linux
