h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

I have been working in a squatted office at the Law School this week, and making good progress.

I went in to the staff room to make a cup of tea this morning, and someone collared me in front of a half-dozen of the admin staff on their break, and told me that I shouldn't be using the room as I'm not staff.

I have three job contracts with the Uni. and have a staff ID card and a staff login, and do teaching and am in the pension scheme, but it seems I'm not 'staff' and someone felt the need to tell me so in front of the admin. So I went back to my squat and packed my books &c and thought about getting a taxi back home and never returning to the place.

Which would be bad, because I am counting on getting a load of teaching hours in the coming year, and I need it, and it would be highly convenient for the school to use me to do the teaching.

OK, so I'm not one of the full-time or even part-time staff, but I do a reasonable amount, and am generally up to lend a hand in a pinch &c &c and it was just plain wrong to humiliate me in front of the admin. I am seriously unhappy.

The line was that I am a research student, and the research students don't get to use the room. I suppose that I really should know my place... Well they can have their poxy room, which I donate my old Spectators and LRBs and Private Eyes &c &c to,but not any more... Somebody must have complained, and I'm not the kind of person to go where I'm not wanted...

I am going to see the head of school next Monday, re the 2011-2012 workload.

I think I'll join the union.

Anyhow, I have been making good thesis progress this week. I was in Edinburgh on Saturday, and have a good number of £££ days coming up over the summer. Shopping went well on Sunday. I went to the flicks last night to see Stake Land, a splendid vampire-zombie end of the world flick, set in the USA, with PORF whackos as the baddies. A ver' good horror indy. I went with Geo.

I think that I have already said something about the shower. I found a small very fine scratch on the face of my Archos this evening. I will have to get some screen protectors.

Don't blame you, Douglas. If they had to complain (and I don't see that you were doing any harm to anybody), they should have picked their moment better. Can't you speak to the head of school about it?

in fact carry on using the room and if you get pulled again point out

"this says im staff, thats good enough for me"
