I know this probably isn't going to excite a lot of people but if like me you rather enjoy watching election analysis, BBC Parliament (508 on Sky) is currently re-broadcasting the BBC 1997 Election Special when labour first swept the Tories out of Government.

what all of it? Including the one Labour Party party where they totally failed to open a bottle of champagne for the cameras, despite them going back over many minutes, along with Paxman's comments about Champagne Socilaism??
That was the real highlight and never really been shown in full since as it lasted over 10 minutes I seem to recall.

We already had Mellor (a personal favourite - if memory serves - the alphabetical listing of candidates forced "Main Putney -Sport and Social Club Anyone but Mellor Campaign) to be read out ahead of the candidate himself.
Also James Goldsmith's cries of "out! out! out!"
and mellor insistign that it was a dismal night for the referrendum party. Well I suppose in such circumstances you take solice where you can find it most.
In other news did anyone else see that Andrew Marr is resigning?

May be sad and be tempted it will bring back memories of a BBC basement room, full of BBC food and wine and the cast and crew of The Election Night Armistice and staggering out at 7:00 to find all the cabs had gone and making my way home in the new dawn of the post-tory regime.
2 days later of course and it was business as usual - PFI continued, Rail Privatization continued, schools got worse, people still died etc!

Wasn't there a guy dressed as a thumb (or holding a big foam one afloat) opposing Mellor? And didn't Mellor suggest that he stick his thumb up his backside, or something like that?

17.5% swing against portillo - I had no clue the change was so big.
No wonder Twigg looked distraught when the seat changed hands again last week
