About finding work and joining the army.

Well just to be certain and proactive and so on, this morning I rung the office of the HR recruiting arm who have invited me for interview and put it to themn. They expressed bewilderment that the army online careers office had said a military clerk and the position I am aplying for known as E2 were the same, for whilst they do share similar and occassionally the same duties, one is military and the other is indeed civilian.

There you go you are going to be one of the civil cervants that got up my nose so many times when I was as military clerk.
Just think if you lick enough boots and other things you could end up as the Permanent Under Secretary of State for Defence.

It's a long way up, but it's not unknown - the last one to do so was I think the Treasury Perm Sec under Major - Terry something.
He started as an Administrative Officer though, which is one up from Administrative Assistant...

I used to work for the MOD on the Navy side. They had "equivalent" civil service and military grades as often both civilians and military would be eligible for the same post. As an HPTO my equivalent in the RN was somewhere between Lieutenant and Lt-Cdr, IIRC. Perhaps AA and Army Clerk are similar.
Salisbury Plain is the tank training range is it not? Could be fun...

It'd be interesting if there were equivilant ranks etc. I'll make a point of finding out.

If you go in as an Admin Assistant you will have the equivalent rank of an NCO. Depending on what grade you are you will be the equivalent of a Junior NCO or a Senior NCO.
Junior NCO is for the lowest. If you have a modicum of ability you will soon get to Senior NCO grade then you can get pissed in the Sergeants Mess.

In the US the civilian GS (general service) rankings roughly match up to military rankings. But you have to remember that the civilians don't have any official military status, and therefore as a broke E-5 I could still tell a GS-15 to get bent. http://www.uscg.mil/mlcpac/iscseattle/Civilian/civilian.htm#MILITARY
The only authority a civilian has is positional authority as granted by someone with military authority. In layman's terms, this means that, as an office assistant for an army colonel, the visitors to that office don't have to sit and wait on your say so, but do because the colonel says you can say so.

I'm not looking at this job for authority (it's admin assiatant for goodness sake!)
I'm going in at E5 whatever that is, problably one beneath scum, but I'm used to that.
