Why is there not even a single thread about Russia, the largest country in the world, having a new president?

I think it appeals to their macho pride that he is "standing up to the west".

Russians are very patriotic, and they felt humiliated by Russia's status in the world until recently.
There's no challenge to Putin in the media now, and dissenters such as Kasparov get imprisoned (albeit for a short time in his case). No wonder Zyuganov has chosen not the challenge the election result!

Do you think it might be because the vast majority of the top men in Russia today, like Putin, were originally KGB ?

thought the money deals were with Yeltsin, not Putin.
And, yes, the screwing up of the money stuff is what drives a lot of anti west feeling. But their govt. went for it. And Putin's backing rests a lot with some of those oligarchs - the ones imprisoned or in exile are the ones that fell out with him. His Judo buddy is one that didn't. And Medvedev himself is (I assume now ex) top man at GazProm.
