The Dam Busters' dog - what should Peter Jackson do?
Alfster Posted Oct 11, 2006

The Lord Of the Ring films were based on fictional books.
The reasons he moved things around is fully explained in the commentaries etc. Had he not the films would have been very lopsided in narrative and action.
The Dambusters film will be based on afactual happenings. The dog was called what it was. Call it that in the film. Stick up a message at the start explaining to the dumb-ass Americans who know nothing about history that it was his name and get on with the film.
The film involves blowing up dams, killing people, drowning towns below the the damns and human sacrifice - to me THAT is more insulting than a word. And the fact that people are still killing each other now and is worse than just calling someone a name does not seem to mean that we erase the killing from history.
If someone is so stupid not to see past one word which is insulting but in this context correct then they have a major problem.
For once, the world could just go 'it's fact': live with it without trying to create an incorrect revisionist history just to shield peoples sensibilities who can not put things into context but just react.
Well, lets have them just launch a few cruise missles at the damn. It won't change the hitorical outcome of the film will it?

Stuff and nonsense.
It's a name a dog was called. Big deal.
I personally wouldn't care at all if it was called n*gg*r in the film. Don't really need to see the film now that I know ol' n*gg*er gets run down by a car... SPOILER!
<>
BASED ON being the thing to bear in mind.
Meanwhile, what are 'afactual happenings'?
Heck, it's just a film. Nog and I were just talking about the disaster Spielberg made of Schindler's List. HISTORY made Hollywood.

Seems like no one gives shit about fact these days. No wonder everything is spiralling into an abyss of apathy.

Because it's been a whole historical thingy that all films ever made were true to what *actually happened*.

I think they should have the Anola Gay drop "Fat man" on the dam.

But then the portly people's anti-defamation lobby would complain about the use of the offensive term Fat Man, so there's just no winning. Maybe they should just can the whole idea of doing a movie. Maybe nobody should say anything any more. Then nobody will be offended ... maybe, or not. This is not said to make light of the fact that racial epithets truly should be relegated to the dustbin of history. We do, however, somehow need to keep a sense of humor, perspective, and sanity about us if possible. Not easy to do these days.

Perhaps he could use the Riders of Rohan, with Gandalf leading them to victory, with the black dog called Ebony getting killed by getting trampled under the Ents by mistake?

"I think they should have the Anola Gay drop "Fat man" on the dam"
Arnie! How dare you!
- Change "Gay" to "Happy"
- Change "fat" to "circumferentially challenged"
- Change "man" to "person"
Phew!

Hi Arnie,
As a matter of historical fact ( we Brits are keen on this in war films ) wasn't the plane called 'Enola Gaye', and named after the pilot's mother?

How dare you us the word "happy"!!
.
Happy, as you well know, is one of the 7 vertically challenged people, in Snow White, and would resent his culture being used in connection with busting dams!

Strictly speaking, 'Enola Gay' took 'Little Boy', not that that sounds much better in PC terms.
'Fat Man' was the second bomb to be dropped, from a different plane.

Oh my God!
...ooops, everyones chosen deity.
I have the soloution to the dog problem.
Although somewhat of a strange idea in PC America, and banned along with Black And White Minstral Show, on America's Next Top Model Show they made up black models to be white, white models to be black, etc, so could they not just cover the bloody dog in make up? That way everyone will be hapy, except perhaps for the poor mut of course, lol.
