h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Well, today being the 20th of October is Bela Lugosi’s 124th birthday! What a big number! Almost a century and a quarter. Too bad he’s not alive to see it. Although if he were alive to see it he’d be so old I’m not so sure that he’d be enjoying himself. Probably wouldn’t be able to blow out 124 candles at any rate!!

Bela was born in Lugos, Austria Hungary in 1882. He died of a heart attack in Los Angeles, California in 1956. He was most famous for his staring role in Dracula which unfortunately got him type cast as a Horror actor and after that he was in alot of terrible B movies. In total he was in 107 films or TV shows. He actually starred in a play in the role of Jesus Christ when he was still in Romania (see the 4th picture). I think he looks pretty convincing! I never would have recognised him if I didn’t already know it was him. He’s had a song written about him: “Bela Lugsoi’s Dead” by Bauhaus, and he features in “Celluloid Heroes” by The Kinks (Avoid stepping on Bela Lugosi, ‘Cos hes liable to turn and bite). Bela has also had a flower named after him “Daylily Bela Lugosi” (or “Hemerocallis Bela Lugosi”).

Bela Lugosi is definately one of my most favorite actors!! So much talent, so wasted. Very tragic.
