This entry is intended to help increase the understanding of ettiquette which I fear is slipping in modern society.

Hi IamWheeler and welcome to PeerReview

This looks like a good start to an article, but aren't there a few more rules worth mentioning? Is it polite to push all the buttons, for instance? Meanwhile, not using the lift during a fire isn't a matter of etiquette but one of safety. Also, since this is a list of rules about etiquette, surely the last one can also be considered a rule rather than a request.

Some of the other articles about etiquette on h2g2: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/brunel/Search?searchstring=Etiquette&searchtype=ARTICLE&show=40&showapproved=1

Oh and Ettiquette --> Etiquette

Opticalillusion- media mynx life would be boring without hiccups

I'm not keen on the way this piece is presented and feel it would be better displayed without the numbers and more content.

Thank you for your input. Most of the rules in this list were based solely on my experience. I will be doing deeper research into the subject and will probably reform it based on other entries I have found. I really do appreciate the input.

Gnomon - time to move on

Well, there aren't any numbers in this, so you must have made the changes.

I'd like to see another important addition: there is a mistaken belief that you can get the lift to arrive quicker by pressing both the up and the down button. This really slows the whole procedure down as it will often cause the lift to interrupt its route to let on someone who wasn't intending on going in that direction anyway. This practice should be discouraged.

Sorry, I should have said "Excellent Entry"! smiley - ok

This is the sort of thing (or at least one of the sorts of things) we are looking for in the Guide, and should have no problem being accepted.

There are a few typos which I may point out later, but it's a bit early to do that sort of nit-picking - we should concentrate on getting all the important points covered first.

Mobile phone use?

Flatulence...

And small children - always hold their hand, so they don't get caught in the doors etc.

Gnomon - time to move on

U.S. -- change this to US as that's the convention we use here

Use 'single quotes' instead of "double quotes".

etiqutte --> etiquette

This article --> This Entry

Before the elevator arrives --> Before the Elevator Arrives

The first thing one should consider when approaching the elevator is where they are going. -- Don't mix "one" and "they". I suggest you should change them both to "you".

If it is not you may go ahead -- add comma after not

When the elevator arrives --> When the Elevator Arrives

More later.

And can you put something in about pressing both buttons, please?

Gnomon - time to move on

on a stretcher or hospital, bed you should -- move the comma from after hospital to after bed

odor --> odour (we use British spelling on this website)

should not be eaten aboard the elevator, drinks are generally acceptable -->
should not be eaten aboard the elevator, although drinks are generally acceptable

a swift an pleasurable experience -->
a swift and pleasurable experience

That's all the changes I can see at the moment. I'll have another look through when you've done those.

You don't appear to have made the changes I asked for. Were you not happy with them? You don't have to make all the changes that your peers recommend, but if you choose not to, it's a good idea to explain why.

MMF - Keeper of Mustelids, with added P.M.A., is now in a relationship.

It might be an idea to use subheaders:
Before the Elevator Arrives
When the Elevator Arrives
During the ride
Arriving at your floor

When I use an elevator, which is often, I also do the following when on the elevator:

Use the 'open doors' button to assist passengers to leave and enter the elevator, particularly if using a wheeled item like a pram, buggy or wheelchair, if the person is infirm or disabled, or heavily laden with shopping or suchlike. This is more polite tan physically holding the door open.
Ask which is their desired floor.
If the answer to the above is vague and a knowledge of the premises is known offer the floor number to the passenger.
Move to the side or rear of the escalator to allow easy ingress and egress of the lift.

When waiting for the elevator do not keep pressing the button. The lift will not come any faster. The passengers already on the lift would not appreciate being plunged into freefall just to facilitate a quicker journey.

Probably:
>>Elevators or lifts as they are called outside the U.S.<<
>>Elevators, or lifts as they are called outside the U.S.,<<

>>that the button was already pressed or may have forgotten to press the button at all.<<
>>that the button was already pressed, may have forgotten to press the button at all, or may just be deciding on which floor they wish to reach.<<

>>odors << = >>odours<<

>>Similiarly, food should not be eaten aboard the elevator, drinks are generally acceptable.<
>>Similiarly, food and alcoholic drinks should not be consumed aboard the elevator. Soft drinks are generally acceptable.<<

Very well written and an interesting read.

When I get out of a lift, I press the close doors button (if fitted) as I pass so it can continue on its way.
