...and I'll be stuck
Something's wrong with my back today, I can't sit down in a comfortable position, but moving and getting the housework done is okay - is it a conspiracy of sorts?
Does my back try to tell me that I spend far too much time at the PC, or is it just an age thing?

Get yourself a hot waterbottle and place it on your back.
Also, if you need to lay down, then raise your legs up. It will help ease the pressure of the part of your back that's sore.

Thanks, I really hope it will pass soon, I can't afford being immobile with my sister and family visiting tonight.
So now, I really have to take care not to make an unwise move

You've most probably just moved funny.
Take some paracetamol and put some heat on it to reduce the swelling.

Pity I'm not closer, I'd pop round and run up and down your back as they do in Swedish massage

I´m swede, get massage every now and then for my aching back and shoulders....and there has never been anyone running up and down my back...

You won't love. You know what my back is like and I don't see the swelling. It will be internal.

Indeed keep your back warm as it sounds like it may have gone into spasm and the warth may help it settle down. Be very wary of putting under strain. I don't want to worry but when I last did that I couldn't even stand or walk for 3 days and I couldn't sit for 10 and had to stay laying on my back.
Since you can stand and walk, some gentle walking on the flat may also be of help tp settling it down.
