A Conversation for Great Hot Drinks

Mint Tea

After a hot day in the desert there's nothing more refreshing than a nice cup of hot, sweet mint tea, ask any Moroccan.

In colder climes a cup of English Breakfast Tea with a slug of Scotch is very nice, it ends up tasting like Rich Fruit cake.

Cool. I had heard that mint tea was drunk in the desert and I am trying to find out more about it for my article at A1127468.

So have you actually been to Morocco and drunk mint tea with the Arabs? How is it served usually? In cups or glasses? And, do they have a teapot or a samovar or what?

Nice to meet you.

Hi Seyms, nice to meet you too. Being an old hippie I've spent quite a bit of time in Morocco sipping mint tea & smoking kif. Mint tea is fairly simple to make, it's made in a normal teapot & drunk in small glasses. Make a pot of tea using 1 strong tea bag(stops mouthful of tea leaves later) & a good handful of freshly picked mint leaves from the tops of the plants(young & succulent) & at least 12 sugar cubes(in the pot) more if you prefer it sweeter. Allow a good 5 minute brew stir well & serve in small glasses decorated with a sprig of mint. I know it seems strange to be sipping hot drinks in the desert but believe me it's really refreshing & the sugar is good for instant energy.

Regards, Mike.

Cheers, Yossarian,

I have seen the film but I am afraid I have not read the book yet (C22). Thanks for the tea recipe - I'm definitely going to give it a go. Maybe I should pitch a tent in the yard and sit in there sipping it to get the right atmosphere. I had a friend at university who spent a year in Morocco before I met him. He learned to gamble there and was uncannily brilliant at cards.

Must read book.

Film is fine, but puhleeze, the book was a true work of art. It put Heller on the map, then back off again when it was noticed he wasn't a geographic location.

If there is a standard for black comedy (place Chris Rock joke here), "Catch 22" is it. It's upsetting to me that the film, rather than the book, is how people know of this brilliant commentary on war, corruption, and the human condition.

As for mint tea, I know little. I drink peppermint tea, does this count? And I'm not Moroccan, which I'm absolutely firm on. I do occasionally eat beach sand though. It's an old family tradition I learned from an old family down the street. They shit bricks...go figure.
