Quelor, welcome to the guide and all it's complexity.

History and philosophy, eh? What sort of history are you interested in, or are you a generalist?

Me, I'm a medievalist, and my specialty is the sociology of heresy in the high and late middle ages, which explains my interest in both Aquinas and Augustine.

Again, welcome. Settle back, get your feet tucked under you, and enjoy the ride. Would you care for an smiley - ale or a smiley - stiffdrink?

Well thank you very kindly for the welcome. My main area of interest is the American Civil War...particuarly as it was viewed in Europe. It is, admittedly, a pretty narrow scope. Over the past few years, though, I've shifted more towards Lincoln, himself, and also to the broader philosophical questions concerning the evolution of both the United States as a nation and democracy as a viable form of government. Aside from that, I have a keen interest in British history, traditional Russian History (pre-Soviet), and intellectual history.

I must say I find your area fascinating. Sociology of heresy...that is so unique. How did you develop that interest? Augustine was one of the first historical figures I became interested in. I remember reading City of God (this was about 14 years ago) and thinking it was the greatest thing ever.

Arrgh...I haven't had time to learn the graphical interface on here. Ummm...I don't suppose either one of those glasses has any tequila in it? I could go for a sunrise right about now.

well, the smiley - stiffdrink is a stiff drink, which I think a tequila sunrise qualifies as...hold the mouse over the image and it will tell you the tag for it, so all you do is put the tag word like this
< stiffdrink > ( but without the spaces before and after).

I have a friend who does Civil War...frankly, I know the basics, but what little I know beyond that comes from Eric Foner. And a Marxist analysis of a war is always a bit suspect.

Okay, I admit it. I'm more of a Foucault fan.

Ahhh... smiley - stiffdrink. Thanks! smiley - smiley

I agree with you on Foner and the general Marxist view of war. It could be my Northeastern bias but, for my money, James McPherson offer's the clearest analysis.

I've never read his books...but I know the man, and we've had some good conversations on the subject of American versus European history. He teaches every so often at my undergrad school, and is great friends with the chair there, which is how I hooked up with him.

That man can tell some great stories, though.
