h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Just back from me hols, and thought you might like a trip around Croagh Patrick ( pr. crow patrick, a.k.a. 'The Reek'). The first glimpse from the Dublin road, if you're lucky and the weather is clear, is of an isolated, perfect blue pyramid, away in the west. It's not the highest mountain in Mayo ( that honour belongs to Mweelrea at just over 3000 feet ) but it stands quite alone with its sister Ben Goram, which it usually overshadows.) At certain times of the year, the setting sun appears to roll down the face of Croagh Patrick, straight into the sea.

On the last Sunday in July, Croagh Patrick is the scene of a huge pilgrimage, when thousande of people climb the mountain from Murrisk village at its foot, and hear Mass said in the chapel at the top. Some go up in bare feet ( but never suffer infections, so they say.)

Seen from the west, near Old Head, on the way to Louisburgh, Croagh Patrick has a smooth breast shape, the nipple kindly provided by the chapel.
