Did you read all of L.M. Montgomery's works, including her "Emily" novels? I preferred the "Emily"s. As for Austen, I regularly have to teach one of her works to the senior classes, which tends to blunt her appeal after a while...

Austen isn't girly, shes brilliant. Any truly great writer can transcend genre and appeal to anyone.
