A Conversation for MEETS FORUM

I've been trying to figure out ways to get more Memphians to join h2g2. (See my journal) I want to make some flyers, but I'm afraid people will mistake them for an ad, and think that I'm selling something. I'd love to get a real local hootoo community going, so that something like this Meets Forum would work here. I'd welcome any suggestions.

BTW, I love Amelie!

How about building up mini-meets to converge on other mini-meets to sweep across the US like a H2g2 amoeba? You do have amoeba over there, right?

Doable?

Yes, I think they can make it, if they don't mind driving a lot. I don't think they are coming to Tennessee though. They're making a big loop around the country, starting in Texas. I'm just interested in trying to get more locals to join h2g2.

If they did a camcorder tape of the run it might get people interested.

The Great Summer 2003 North American Rolling Meet-Up!!!

A friend of mine has suggested we film it. In fact he is really insistant that we film it. I even bought a magazine about camcorders!

But I want to live it, not film it, myself!

Hey ho!

Where are you JEllenJ? Tennesee? GTB is the map and plan man. I just post posts and look cheerful! Could you come and meet up with us as we pass through somewhere else? Both Graceland and the Appalachians were mentioned in the early plans, but we got lured out West... smiley - sadface

Thanks for posting!

Hey! We are going to be in Memphis on the 4th July, no less! Do you fancy meeting up then?

Sure! When will you be getting in, the 3rd? Or the 4th? I'm sure we can arrange a meetup. I'll have to check with my family, see what their plans are. There might be some fireworks downtown on the 4th. I thought maybe we could go to Corky's and get a barbeque! (Unless you two are vegetarians!) Memphis has great barbeque. The Rendevous has good barbeque too, and lots of atmosphere.

Graceland is overrated in my opinion, but if you're Elvis fans you might want to go. Sun Studios smiley - musicalnote is here, as is Beale street. Lemme know what kind of things y'all are interested in. I might not be able to tag along for all of it, but I can provide maps and info, and I can definitely go out for dinner. And again, I'll check with my family and see if they have any ideas. Feel free to email me, my addy's on my page.

Oh, wow!

In theory we arrive on the 3rd, and leave on the 5th.

We both fancied Graceland, but that is because we have both heard of it, I guess. I *know* that everywhere I go I could spend a week or a month and not see it all, so whatever happens I will inevitably miss some great stuff. I know what you mean about tourist attractions being over-rated. I don't rate Stonehenge, and always take visitors to a place called Avebury which is much cooler and much less well known. So we are in your hands, JEllen.

We don't need to decide right now do we?

'Course we don't.

But I am excited, I have to admit.

It's quite a trek you're taking on, quite a journey indeed. smiley - biggrin Oooo, I thought of a neat little thing - if we spend any time downtown, we should stop in and see the Peabody ducks! The Peabody is a hotel in downtown Memphis that has live ducks swimming in a fountain in their ritzy lobby.

My sleep schedule tends to be a bit odd, it runs in circles, but I'll just have to be sure I get up when you are here. Not everyday we get visiting hootooers in this neck of the woods.

Hmm, we could have lunch at the Peabody cafe. Yes there are plenty of things we can do. It will be crowded downtown on the Fourth, but that's not such a bad thing. Hmm, lunch at the Peabody, dinner at the Rendevous, and Beale Street and Sun Studios in between. That would work out nicely I think. Can you afford to eat out twice? Both restaurants are nice, but not too pricey. Plus we'll need to take a walk by the Mississippi River; I know a spot with a grand view.

Mmm, I'm getting sleepy, it's 2am here. I've been on h2g2 way too much for the last couple nights - I am such a hootoo addict.

Talk to you soon. smiley - towel JE

Well this whole thing only happened because I was drinking rum and coke at about midnight one night in Australia, and GTB was drinking Absinthe at about 4.00 or 5.00 am in Texas, so bizzare sleep patterns are something of a feature of this trip!

Take care, and looking forward to it!
