Techie Question?
Smudger879n Started conversation Dec 30, 2003
Hi Folks, After a dispute I had with my ISP about an item on my phone bill stating that I had visited an "adult web site" After investigation they decided not to charge me for it
I was more annoyed about it being on my bill in the first place
Any way, I have since found out that I can check "my connection" tab on my Internet explorer to find out if my PC has visited any such site.
Also how to check my "add and remove programs" on my control panel.
Is there any other way I can keep a check on these phantom "Diallers"
as I am the only person that uses this PC, so I know for a fact that the site in question was not visited by this PC!
All I want really is to find out if there are any other ways of checking?

I am really ignorant in these issues. That's why I use Zone Alarm to keep the eye on the programs that would love to connect the internet. So far it works fine for me. The main danger here is that my kids use my PC too, for surfing around and such. Sometimes they find some trash from there.

Smudger, my advice would be to invest in an internet firewall. Kazzaa is a home to as many unscrupulous characters as good, so you are likely to get many viruses and trojan horses hanging around, I also quite regularly get trojan's trying it on while hooting so a strong possibility is that someone has got inside your system and used you as a gateway to the site without your knowledge. Scary I know but ,unfortunately, more than likely. If you do have a firewall (I use norton internet security, but have heard good things about MacAfee) is it up to date? they are always finding new ways in. Also are you running windows update? They regularly fix security issues that occur with the undertested software we are forced to use, but it does at least keep us safe. If you haven't done either then expect a veeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrryyyyyyyyyy lllllooooooooonnnnnnngggggggg download, especially on a dialup connection!

Thanks for your answers folk
Sal, Ive never used my digi-box for E-Mails or anything, as I do all that on my PC
TK, I have PC-cillan 2000 for security, and its worked great so far!
Its also always updating itself to combat the latest viruses
Its scary to think that some one has hacked into my dial up ISP
I am always checking my connections tab now, to see if it has been targeted again! Thanks again!

PC cillan if I remember is an antivirus only, not a firewall, which would stop people from using your computer as a proxy to access those sites. I believe kazzaa may have a free download.
I'd still keep checking the connection tab though.

Ah! Thanks TK, I must admit I got a shock, as I had been told that nothing would get by Pc cillan 2000!
I used to use Kazza quite a lot for music down loads, but now Im scared to go back on in case I get another hacker giving me grief??
