Banks and Bureaucracy

When you get your PhD you become a doctor. Great I thought - you get to change your bank details, passport and driving licence....marvellous.
However the bank insists on seeing your certificate if you want to change your title, in the same way women taking their husbands surname after getting married have to show their marriage certificate. They were incredibly insistant on this. OK, so I did this. But...amongst other ID you can use is your passport.
Now when changing your passport you have to send off supporting documents. Well my PhD certificate wasn't getting folded up in the post, so I got a signed official copy. I took it along to the passport office - and was told that I DIDN'T NEED IT when changing my title.
So....you can change your title to doctor on your passport without ANY documentation, then get a driving licence and a bank account in that title.
On one hand you have crushing bureacracy from the bank....and on the other a whacking great loophole.
Ah well...that's life.
