The following is taken from a study carried out by The Govt Medical College and Hospital, Chandigarh, India:

The world has entered the new millennium but it is a harsh reality that the woman in India has long been ill-treated in our male-dominated society. She is deprived of her independent identity and is looked upon as a commodity. She is not only robbed of her dignity and pride by way of seduction by the men outside, but also may become a victim of cruelty by her saviours, within the four walls of her own house. However, her trauma does not end here, it may even go to the extent of forcing her to commit suicide or she may be burnt to death for various reasons, including that of dowry. This type of violence transgresses the boundaries of caste, class, region or religion and is prevalent in almost all societies in India. The system of dowry is a social practice which on its own has claimed the lives of scores of women--both young and old, and has made life a virtual hell for many more.

Lucky Llareggub - no more cannibals in our village, we ate the last one yesterday..

Recently in India a lot of Hindus attended mass-conversion ceremonies and became Buddhists, thus escaping from the
caste system.
Maybe Indian women could try the same route as a possible means of escape from prejudice and cruelty?

Only problem i would see is that for a lot of people its tightly ingrained to there cultural system. The whole caste system its self as seen to day is not exactly what is taught in hindu scriptures. A women trying to escape this may have to loose her family and home to do this without being forced back in by family or worse.

Honour crimes for things as a slur on the family of faith is just as common in backwards parts of India as it is in backwords parts of Pakistan. The m ain difference being that the Indian goverment is at least trying to stop the practice. On a similier vain Pakistan is finally having a review of its unislamic and repungent rape laws. Lets hope there is a revolution to this evil crime and have soe thing in place that works and does not discriminate against women and does not mean that women will let men get away with there crimes. The only poblem would be, as usual, in getting the out of city communities to follow this as they don't follow tribal law mainly.

Indeed, the evil dees of the human race in the world is only of set by the generosity and caring of others.

The world is full of stories and saga's of pure evil and those of pure unselfishness.

If you spend to long in the mire of the evil then the pervertions it cause will loose effect on the observer, tostay pure one needs to be able to step ack from such evilsfrom time to time to stop its effects from taking place. This is the problem of people living in those parts, they can't see the evilness of the practices due to always being engulfed in such things on one level or another.

Yes, it's all too easy to fall into the mire when you're balancing on the edge of the pit.
