I had my bike nicked yesterday in town.
Today I got a message from a facebook friend saying he'd seen one like it locked outside Tara St Station.
Lo and behold. We are reunited. Hallelujah!
Moral: have a distinctive looking bike. A recumbent will do nicely.

That's fantatic news! 
I was reunited with my car yesterday. I reported it stolen, but then discovered the council had towed it away.

I just recently read a story about someone else recovering their stolen bike. I can't remember how they located it, possibly a GPS tracker, but when they did they saw it was unattended and not locked so they just stole it back.
Stolen bicycles are the police's lowest priority. They often won't respond even if you do locate it. Best to go vigilante.
