Why is the script so abominable? Whatever is not delivered with oozing sleaze and smarm is aphorized through grimly gritted teeth.

I've not seen Versailles, but you adequately describe modern television drama in two sentences.

I think I preferred it in the 1970s when we had decent writers and actors, but low-budget productions. These days, it's all about business - and it can be very profitable. It's not worth producing anything if it won't make a colourful boxed set for the wider demographic.

I recorded Wolf Hall a while ago, in the hope that this might be the exception - I haven't found time to watch it yet.

Do watch it. It has genuine variety of character and a marvellously enigmatic hero. Plus, it is dedicated to countering the saintly reputation of Thomas More. Avert your eyes when King Henry VIII is on screen, but otherwise fine. The decapitation of Anne Boleyn is a gem of a scene.

It gets worse. The dialogue has descended to the middle-three Star Wars level; petty squabbling of spoiled brats.

The historical Louis XIV was painfully aware of how his uncle Charles I had attempted personal rule, alienated his parliament, and lost his head. He managed his personal and political relationships with extraordinary brilliance to prevent a recurrence.

We watch it for the costumes. I play Wordbrain on my phone to distract myself.
