Hi.
Well firstly it doesn't matter where people are, because the posts on h2g2 are stored even if they're not online at the time people can always reply to a conversation post later. That means you can have friends in many different time zones 
.
Most people are subscribed to conversations, so they get alerted on their spaces, (and on their 'my conversations' page) when a new post in made.
If you go to people's spaces which you get to by clicking on their names then you can see their most recent conversation postings.
