Well for a vareity of reasons there are a lot of researchers logged in at once at the moment, I'm sure if you give it half an hour things will speed up for you.

When I wrote the first thing on this page and then pressed on the button, it took over a minute to go there, and when I seen someone els had written to here and I tryed to look at it, it took 45sec to get here,
now I know that is not slow to a lot of people, but I am used to getting to pages in about 5 sec

You're probably linking here with a dodgy BBC server. It does happen from time to time.

Try launching a new browser. That frequently fixes the problem smiley - ok

It's usually a little faster than that, are you an opera user by any chance?

Don't abadon a site just because you've dropped in at a busy time...

If I'm accessing from the university computer cluster, which is pretty fast then it's almost instant most of the time, unless it's busy.

And of course it's worth the wait!

Hmm, was going at a snails pace for me about ten minutes ago... now seems back to its normal speed - (i.e. takes about two second to load a page or conversation on an ADSL line)...

Sorry to hear you're having difficulties, one possible problem is as has just been mentioned, you've managed to join the site at exactly the wrong (or right) moment - there's just been a fairly important notice given out about the future of the site (smiley - dontpanic it's not closing down or anything smiley - winkeye) and there is probably a far heavier quantity of traffic on the site right now than there is normally.

Well, as if someone heard me and fixed it, I am finding it a bit faster now,
so I might just stay a bit longer smiley - winkeye

No it's just that opera tells you how long that you've been opening the page.

that is another thing I like about it,
10 seconds can seem like minutes when you are waiting for a page to load, but with opera you know how long you have been waiting, and you know if it is still working or not smiley - winkeye

Amy: ear-deep in novels, poetics, and historical documents.

To be totally honest, h2g2 tends to be a relatively slow site in general - but given the high graphic content (particularly in the Goo skin), it's alliance with BBCi, the sheer number of people online at a time, *and* a few persnickety servers combined - this shouldn't come as much of a surprise. So it'll be slower than many sites (especially than ones with few graphics), but it shouldn't be hugely noticable most of the time.

That said, every now and then the servers throw a fit and things will take ages to load, or it will appear that you've been logged out (even though you really aren't), or that the site doesn't exist or can't be accessed. smiley - dontpanic Usually the amazing and wonderful server god, Jim Lynn, will have things fixed quickly.

Patience is a good thing. smiley - winkeye

*won't go into how much faster h2g2 is normally now that we're part of the Beeb...* smiley - winkeye
