Origin of the name
Jim Lane Posted Mar 31, 2006
'Stevens changed the band's name to "MOTT THE HOOPLE" - from a novel of the same name by Willard Manus. The book is about an eccentric that works in a circus freak show.'
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mott_the_Hoople#History (although of course this explanation leaves open the question what a "hoople" is).
Cromwellt and I have both created articles on Wikipedia. From somewhere, though, I seem to recall reading that h2g2 doesn't want EG entries that are based on Wikipedia articles (even if the Researcher here is the one who created the article there). Can any of the experienced hootooites confirm that?

I'll pass it to the Sub Eds, i am not entirely sure on that one.
But thanks for that info! Band names in general are a fascinating subject, speaking as someone who has been involved with musicians most of my adult life; i've witnessed much scratching of heads in smoky rooms & "how about????" convos!

Yup, this is true. You can certainly write about the same topic, but one of the criteria for the Edited Guide is that the entry be *original* writing. Or, of course, you could choose to write about a completely separate topic altogether.
Mikey
One of my favorite bands....
Jim Lane Posted Apr 2, 2006
The founders were working on putting together the band, but hadn't yet selected a name. One of the people involved always used folders to organize papers. The plan was to get the band going by October, so, lacking a band name, he labeled that folder "October project". At the meeting to pick the band name, one of the other musicians noticed the folder. The band is now called "October Project".

Mikey, thanks for the confirmation. I've thought about writing something for the EG that wouldn't be accepted in Wikipedia because it would be too strongly opinionated.
The trouble is that each of these sites can suck up a huge amount of time. I doubt there are many people who are heavily involved with both, because both are addictive and people tend to gravitate toward one or the other. Every time I think about writing for the EG, I think about all the things I haven't had time to do on Wikipedia.
No doubt about it, I gotta find a rich girl to marry so I have more free time.

Hmm; maybe go to the the front page & Ask h2g2.....????
But just think, if you write a great Guide Entry you may well end up with a fan club & you never know, one of them might be a rich girl....
zdt*NOT rich, don't even think about it!
Wiki and h2g2
Cromwellt Posted Apr 14, 2006
I'm definitely with JimLane regarding Wiki. Both are very time consuming, meaning that most people will do at best a lot of one and a little of the other. So far for me, it is a little of this and a lot of that. And I have the same problem he has: no, not the lack of a rich girl to marry (though that would be nice); I have come on here to look around or write or something, and then thought of all the things I haven't gotten to on Wiki. Kinda frustrating. I guess it all comes down to balance, time management, and the meaning of life. Whoa! Where did that come from?
But overall, I think there is plenty of room in this place (or is it a place?) we call the internet for both.
Peace and good will toward all humanity!

Let me rephrase that: Not the lack of a rich girl to marry (though having one would be nice)...

Hmmm....maybe you are setting your sights too high (as the periscope complained) & just having a nice girl might be a good start.
I know someone on here called Rich, but doubt he will marry you. Never know though, he is a Scout (& Sub Ed? Not sure; advice Lil) so if you write a nice Guide Entry, you may be in with a chance. He likes Jaffa cakes & bats.

(The two Wikipedians linked above are found on the talk page of that article. Both use the same names here on h2g2 as they do on Wikipedia and both have links from their Wikipedia user pages to their h2g2 personal spaces.)
I've done some messing about on Wikipedia, but I don't have an account there.

A nice girl
Cromwellt Posted Apr 20, 2006
Actually, I do have a nice girl I'm dating. And yes, the fact that she is nice is more important to me than whether or not she is rich. Rich in character is much better than rich in money, if I have to choose.
