An obscure national monument to war correspondents will be the site next week of a high-profile salute to four U.S. journalists who died covering the war on terrorism.(9-23-03)

The ceremony will honor David Bloom of NBC News; Michael Kelly of The Atlantic Monthly and The Washington Post; Elizabeth Neuffer of The Boston Globe; and Daniel Pearl of The Wall Street Journal.

As the media become more monolithic by the day and fewer local news services field correspondents but instead tend to rely on the larger, global news services, this might not be much more than the patriots honoring their own bloody legacy to insure cooperation within the ranks.

I do not know a lot about the reporters but there is a fascinating book out by Pearls wife worth taking a look at. Not all "Patriots" share the same view.

In Pakistan the video of his (D.P.)murder is available at every newstand. It is not obscene, is a triumph in their eyes.

I hope you'll take the time to read Philip Agee's thoughts on the media.

As a former CIA operative, he has some interesting insights that might explain why Pearl and others came to violent ends through essentially no fault of their own maybe but maybe because of what could be justifiably suspected about them.
