A Conversation for Teenage view on being Goth

Growing up Goth

Hi Dolly,

You article reminded me of how frustrating it is to be a teenage goth. I put up with exactly the same prejudices you are now, though back then goth was more reviled than it is today, and going through a really bad patch where it was ignored at best and ridiculed at worst. There were only a handful of goths in my fairly large home town. Thanks to the likes of MM, skaters, and others, there are actually more alternative choices being brought into the mainstream. For this reason, not all older goths consider those under 18 to be posers! (I'm 25 now.)
Right now is probably a good time to be a goth, although I'm not heavily into the scene myself (no clubs within reasonable taxi distance, and no money for clothes/cds/etc since I'm an impoverished student!). Anyway, the good news is that as you get older, people get less narrow-minded. I often get complimented on my make-up by women of all ages and guys find you more interesting. As long as you remain true to yourself, you will always have an inner peace that those who make rude comments will never find. smiley - smiley

I go through this. But the only people who laugh at me are the ones who do not know what goth is and what it's about and just assume things from the images that the media give goths. But i just pity this people for not knowing. xxx

I can kind of understand that. As some Goths seem to confuse darkness with evil and as it says in one article on H2g2 some "wannabe goths" (as some people know them) do tend to see Goth as a way to imtidate (excuse the spelling). But if you chat and get to know most goths they are pretty friendly. Though i've been known to make little girls cry when i walk past them but not on purpose! lol. I usually don't intend of imtidating anyone i just like what i like and wear what i what and just want to be left alone.

I'm shy and i think some Goths in shops and places assume i'm shy because i'm a wannabe and i'm around Goths but i'm not. I can't help being shy! I'm not shy just around goths, i'm shy around people in general! lol. xxx

I have been obsessed and enthralled by Gothic culture, especially vampires, for as long as I can remember. I do stare at Goths when I see them, but that's because
a) I think they're gorgeous
b) I want to make friends with them
But I get stared at just as much. If it really bothered me, I'd stop with the top hat and platform boots smiley - biggrin
