Hi there! I'm glad you've decided to join H2G2. There are a lot of places to hang out here. Eventually, you'll get a note from your very own ACE (Assistant Community Editor) who can probably give you more in-depth information about the site than I can, but I'm happy to help.
If you'd like to change your nickname or the browser skin, click on 'Preferences' to the left of the page. If your Personal Space is in plain text, you can insert something from the Smiley page by using the corresponding Long Code or Short Code.
Rocket Man has made a page for New Researchers. It's at A725500. Or, Shea has a really great entry at A534953 (Shea's List 'o Links).
For ideas on changing your Personal Space, you can go to A690518. There is a short introduction to GuideML here as well as a link to the GuideML-Clinic.
If you're looking for information on a specific subject, you can use the H2G2 search engine.
As for conversations, the bottom right of the main page (http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide) has a list of the 5 busiest conversations on H2G2.
Hope this helps. If you have more questions, let me know.
